abstract

abstract background: premature infants are subjected to many painful procedures during care and treatment. the aim of this study was to assess the effect of music therapy on physiological and behavioral pain responses of premature infants during and after blood sampling. materials and methods: this study was a cross-over clinical trial conducted on 20 infants in a hospital affiliated to tehran university of medical sciences for a 5-month period in 2011. in the experimental group, “transitions” music was played from 5 min before until 10 min after blood sampling. the infants’ facial expressions and physiological measures were recorded from 10 min before until 10 min after sampling. all steps and measurements, except music therapy, were the same for the control group. data were analyzed using sas and spss software through analysis of variance (anova) and chi-square tests. results: there were significant differences between the experimental and control groups ( p = 0.022) in terms of heart rate during needle extraction and at the first 5 min after sampling ( p = 0.005). considering the infant’s sleep–wake state in the second 5 min before sampling, the statistical difference was significant ( p = 0.044). difference was significant ( p = 0.045) during injection of the needle, in the first 5 min after sampling ( p = 0.002), and in the second 5 min after sampling ( p= 0.005). there were significant difference in infants’ facial expressions of pain in the first 5 min after sampling ( p = 0.001). conclusions: music therapy reduces the physiological and behavioral responses of pain during and after blood sampling.

Comparison of the Effect of Music Therapy and Swaddling on Pain Intensity Caused by Blood Sampling in Premature Infants Admitted to the Neonatal Inten-sive Care Unit: A Randomized Trial

Background: Pain causes mental-psychological injuries in babies by affecting neuronal development. This study was conducted to evaluate effect of music therapy and Swaddling on physiological indicators and pain intensity caused by blood sampling in preterm neonates. Method and Materials: This randomized controlled clinical trial was performed on 51 preterm neonates admitted to NICU of Persian ...

The Impact of Blood Sampling Site on Pain Score in Preterm Infants: A Crossover Randomized Clinical Trial

Background Blood sampling is a usual and painful procedure on preterm infant. Repeating painful procedures may affect the process of normal brain development and Pain management is important for nurses. This study was conducted to evaluate and compare pain score in two sites of blood sampling in preterm infants. Materials and Methods Blood sampling is a usual and painful procedure on preterm in...

Comparison of the Effects of Attachment Training for Mothers on the Behavioral Responses of Premature Infants: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: Premature infants are among high-risk groups in community who need to be hospitalized at intensive care units for survival and receiving basic or special care. Hospitalization at neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) unsettles the family and leads to the separation of parents from their infants. This study aimed to determine the effects of maternal attachment behaviors on the behavi...

The Effect of Plastic Cover on Regulation of Vital Signs in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Cross-over Clinical Trial

Background: Considering the susceptibility of preterm infants to disturbances of vital signs, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of using plastic covers on regulation of vital signs in preterm neonates. Methods: This randomized, cross-over, clinical trial was carried out on 80 preterm infants admitted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Taleghani Hospital, Tabriz, Iran. Th...

The Effect of Holy Quran Recitation on the Physiological Responses of Premature Infants during Phlebotomy: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: One of the painful procedures in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is phlebotomy. However, the use of non-pharmacological approaches could be helpful in reducing the pain. This study aimed to determine the effect of Quran recitation on the physiological parametersof premature infants during and after phlebotomy. Materials and Methods This randomized, double-blind clinical tri...
